Sadly, Ethel has now been hospitalized, but the former US representative has encouraged everyone to keep her in their thoughts and prayers. Joseph has also requested that the family’s privacy be respected during this time.
Ethel, who is passionate about advocating for social issues, turned 96 on April 11, 2024. Joseph showed the world how Ethel enjoyed her special day surrounded by her big family in a heartwarming photo on X. He captioned the post, “Happy 96th to the World’s most amazing Gramma!! 🎂.”
Her daughter, Kerry Kennedy, also celebrated Ethel’s birthday, highlighting some of her greatest achievements. She penned on Instagram, “My mother founded @rfkhumanrights in the fall of 1969 to carry forth my father’s legacy. For more than half a century, my mom has been a champion for justice, standing with human rights defenders around the globe.”
Kerry stated that Ethel’s bravery and commitment to human rights inspire their team daily. Her influence drives the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, a non-profit organization, to ensure government accountability and advocate for human rights education and youth organizing.
Additionally, they promote dignity and equality in workplaces and investment sectors while supporting grassroots changemakers. In recognition of all Ethel has accomplished, Kerry praised her mother, gushing, “Happy birthday to the greatest mom I could ever imagine! 🎂❤️.”
Ethel became more focused on her activism work after her husband was assassinated in June 1968 just after he decided to enter the presidential race.

Prior to this tragedy, she had already gained public attention for her support of the campaign of John F. Kennedy and later Robert during his successful run for a US Senate seat representing New York.
In the late 1970s, fueled by a renewed dedication to public service, Ethel devoted much of her time and energy to various social causes, particularly the Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Project.
